Studienstart für neue Studierenden
Welcome to Your First Semester!
This page explains your first steps in studying sociology.
1. Which modules do I take?
Which modules are due in your first semester depends on your degree programme. The course schedule shows this for each programme, semester by semester, with all module codes (e.g. T1, SO1, BS1). Click on a module to see its type of assessment and its content.
2. Three registrations, two systems
- Courses in Stud.IP: Sign up for the lectures, tutorials and seminars. There you will find dates, rooms and course materials.
- Modules in the Löwenportal: Between the beginning and the middle of the semester, register for every module you want to complete.
- Examinations in the Löwenportal: Registering for a module also registers you for its examination. However, you still need to register there for the module assessment, that is, for the specific piece of work you want to submit in the module. Without this second registration, you cannot take the examination. This registration usually has to be completed at least one week before the examination date.
3. Frequently asked questions
- I'm going to miss the first session. What should I do? Don't worry. In the first session, lecturers usually give an overview of the course. Send them a short email, or ask the Student Advisory Service.
- Do I need to buy books before the semester starts? No. Lecturers will name the reading in the first session, and you can borrow most of it from the library.
- Where can I see my grades? In the Löwenportal. Grading may take a few weeks.
- Who can help me? The Student Advisory Service and the Sociology Student Council (Studentische Institutsgruppe).
