Responsibilities of the Examination Board

The examination board is responsible for:

  • granting compensations for physical and mental disadvantages;
  • recognition of achievements accomplished at other universities;
  • recognition of achievements accomplished in other courses;
  • complaints concerning the assessment of study and module performance
  • applications for BA and MA theses.
  • applications to Master's/PhD.'s/Habilitation's programmes

The board furthermore provides advice on the degree programs offered at the institute: B.A. in Sociology 60 LP /90 LP /120 LP; B.A, in Political science & Sociology 180 LP, M.A. in Sociology 45/75 - 120 LP.

How to credit modules and placement in other semesters when changing degree programme or university

  1. Download the forms from the webpages of Examination Office (credit / placement)
  2. Fill in the forms
  3. Meet with those responsible for the module (professors) to obtain signatures and to clarify any questions
  4. Have forms signed by the chairman of the Examination Board of the Institute of Sociology (bring your completed forms to the secretary of the institute to Ms. Dey or Ms. Tuchardt

Who can supervise my thesis? (BA and MA)

In the right-hand column on this page you will find a document listing the staff available for discussing the topic of your BA/MA thesis. The staff listed can be appointed as your first and/or second thesis supervisor and examiner. Their respective areas of interest are indicated.

In accordance with a resolution passed by the Institute’s Board (18/11/2014), at least one professor at the Institute of Sociology must be appointed to act as supervisor and examiner of your master’s thesis.

What are the conditions to meet in order to apply for the Master's programme in Sociology in Halle?

You have to meet the following conditions:

  • You have completed your BA in sociology or...
  • You have a BA degree in a discipline of social sciences (ethnology, philosophy, cultural studies, political studies, economics etc.) and you have completed at least 60 LP/ECTS in sociology;
  • you have completed your BA with at least 2.7 average grade;
  • you have completed a module on empirical methods of scientific research or equivalent; it must be evident from the title of the module;
  • you have at least 60 LP/ECTS in sociology; this requires that you have completed modules in sociological theory, social structure analysis, specialised sociology (economic sociology, educational sociology, urban sociology, art sociology, etc.), and/or research methods in sociology (especially modules in the fields of statistics and qualitative research); this must be clear from the title of the module.

I do not meet all the requirements to apply for the Master's programme in Sociology in Halle. What can I do?

You can complete missing modules/LP/ECTS in sociology in Halle or at your university and at the same time enrol as a guest student (upon application to the Examination Office of the Faculty of Philosophy I in Halle) in order to take master's courses and to visit the corresponding modules that are relevant to you in advance. If you subscribe to a visiting student status (not accepted for all, please keep in touch with the Examination Office of the Philosophical Faculty I), you have the added advantage to complete the examination in the choosen modules which can be recognized as completed modules at a later point after your successful enrolement as student in the Master programme in Halle.
